GALTx eNews: Planning Ahead Can Be The Best Gift!
We all tend to think we will outlive our pets, but nothing about life is guaranteed. We owe it to them to make arrangements for their care and safety if we cross the bridge first.
Many adoption contracts, including GALT’s, require adopted pets to return to the group if the adopter passes away. That might seem to address the issue, but you still need to make sure those aware of your passing know of the requirement and how to contact the adoption group. Consider designating a geographically close friend or family member your emergency contact and share with them care instructions and a house key so that they can provide immediate care and facilitate a transfer back to the adoption group if that becomes necessary.
If your pets do not have an adoption group to return to, please spend a little time identifying either an individual or an organization that will be willing to take them on your passing. Be sure to document your wishes, identify any special needs your pet has, and provide funding for their care. Sometimes this can be as easy as leaving written instructions with a loved one. In more complicated circumstances, you might want to consult with a legal professional about creating a pet trust or including the documentation of your wishes in a comprehensive estate plan.
If you have the resources, please be sure to consider the long term cost of caring for your pets. We all know how expensive vet bills can be and providing enough funding goes a long way to ensuring your wishes are observed. If you would like to remember the GALT hounds as part of your estate planning and have any questions, please reach out to Barbara Christian at bchristian@galtx.org. As always, thank you for your continued support.
