GALTx eNews: Planning Ahead Can Be The Best Gift!

We all tend to think we will outlive our pets, but nothing about life is guaranteed. We owe it to them to make arrangements for their care and safety if we cross the bridge first.

Many adoption contracts, including GALT’s, require adopted pets to return to the group if the adopter passes away. That might seem to address the issue, but you still need to make sure those aware of your passing know of the requirement and how to contact the adoption group. Consider designating a geographically close friend or family member your emergency contact and share with them care instructions and a house key so that they can provide immediate care and facilitate a transfer back to the adoption group if that becomes necessary.

If your pets do not have an adoption group to return to, please spend a little time identifying either an individual or an organization that will be willing to take them on your passing. Be sure to document your wishes, identify any special needs your pet has, and provide funding for their care. Sometimes this can be as easy as leaving written instructions with a loved one. In more complicated circumstances, you might want to consult with a legal professional about creating a pet trust or including the documentation of your wishes in a comprehensive estate plan.

If you have the resources, please be sure to consider the long term cost of caring for your pets. We all know how expensive vet bills can be and providing enough funding goes a long way to ensuring your wishes are observed. If you would like to remember the GALT hounds as part of your estate planning and have any questions, please reach out to Barbara Christian at bchristian@galtx.org. As always, thank you for your continued support.

GALTx eNews: The Glimmer Of Normalcy Returns!

In the second quarter of 2021, we saw the glimmer of a return to normal! We started the quarter hosting our 20th Anniversary Dinner virtually for the first time ever and thank everyone who joined us for a Salum dinner by delivery! As the vaccinations rolled out, we finished off the quarter with our first in person event in more than a year, our 20th Anniversary Brunch at Stoneleigh P in Dallas! We so enjoyed seeing everyone who could come and can’t wait to see you again!

We also hosted three on-line auctions of art, accessories, a Florida Friends & Family Vacation and so much more to help the hounds while we remained apart! These auctions raised over $7,000 and we thank all of our bidders! Additionally, Darla Dean hosted an on-line Spring Bling Touchstone Crystal by Swarovski fundraiser benefiting the hounds! We hope you enjoy these on-line events and that you’ll continue to bid high and shop often to help the hounds! Our vet and feed bills for just Dallas and New Mexico for the second quarter were nearly $85,000 and have totaled more than $151,000 for the year!

Our adoption team remained super busy with 47 hounds finding forever homes in the Dallas and New Mexico programs. Another 14 hounds found homes with our Central Texas team. GALT welcomed 61 hounds to our programs, 45 in Dallas and New Mexico and 16 in Central Texas. Three of these hounds came from shelters, five were surrendered to us by their adopters, and the rest came to us from the racing industry, including 28 that came all at once near the end of June!

Our fantastic adoption team worked down the adoption application backlog and we reopened adoption applications in June. Many thanks to all for your patience as we caught up. As is typical for us, foster homes remain one of our most limited key resources and we currently have about 40 hounds in boarding in Dallas awaiting their chance to take the next step towards adoption. We can’t thank our volunteers, donors, adopters and supporters enough for getting us through these challenging times. Please consider a donation to get us through the rest of 2021! Thank you!

Most dog lovers now know to watch out for Xylitol in almost everything now as it is highly toxic to dogs. But it also goes by these names: 1,4-anhydro-d-xylitol, Anhydroxylitol, birch bark extract, birch sugar, d-xylitol, xylite, xylitylglucoside, and Zylatol. GALTx eNews: The Dog Days Of Summer Are Here!

We are already half way through 2021, the Fourth of July is upon us, and the dog days of summer came with force this year! Please be sure to keep your hounds safe during the fireworks. Check your fence and gate now. Stay home and bring your pups in during the fireworks shows. Close all the windows, play soothing music, and keep “bravery biscuits” handy to lighten the mood with treats. Read more tips for keeping your dogs safe for the Fourth here.

With the unprecedented heat hitting some areas, our usual hot weather advice seems a bit insufficient this year. When it is over 100 degrees, your hound cannot safely be outside doing anything for more than a minute or two for a short potty break in the shade. Please keep them resting, inside in air conditioning if possible during this kind of heat. Make sure they have access to plenty of water and that you know the symptoms of heat stroke (which can include elevated breathing rates, dry or sticky gums, abnormal gum color, lethargy, disorientation, or seizures) so that you can promptly seek veterinary care if needed. Consider using cooling coats or collars, even inside.

If you’re fortunate enough to live where the temps are down in the 80s, you still need to take care that your hounds stay heat safe. At just 80 degrees, pavement will be over 125 paw burning degrees in the sun. Car interiors heat up to 100 degrees within just ten minutes. Be sure to schedule your outside walks and exercise for cooler evenings or mornings. Read more about how to help your hound beat the typical summer heat here and please stay safe and cool this summer!

GALTx eNews: Light Up 2022 By Submitting Your Photos!

Now through July 31, 2021, we are accepting photo submissions for GALT’s 2022 Calendar! Submissions are limited to GALT members and their greyhounds and/or their foster hounds. It doesn’t matter where you adopted your hound, but you must be a current member for inclusion. Get your membership here first, if you’re not already a member.

As a rule of thumb, images in the range of 8” X 10” at 300 dpi/ppi, or 1280 X 960 ppi or above are ideal. Files less than 150 KB are way too small. If your email asks, be sure to select “actual size” to send your files and you can send large files one or two at a time. Social media platforms reduce the size of posted photos, so please send the original instead of downloading from Facebook or other social media. JPEG, TIFF, PNG or BMP are acceptable formats. If you’ve edited the photo, please also send a copy of the original.

Now for the tough part: select only your favorite six photos to send. The calendar is for greyhounds, large sighthounds and sighthound mixes only; no other pets, babies or people faces in the photos. People parts, such as hands, legs, torsos are fine. When you have your final picks, email them to mmclaughlin@galtx.org. Include your name(s) with the dogs’ names in the email, and the words “GALT calendar” in the subject!

The deadline for 2022 GALT Calendar sponsor ad graphics is just two weeks later on August 15, 2021. Sponsoring a month costs $150 and sponsoring the cover is $500. If you wish for your dog’s photo to be featured for the month of your sponsorship, please submit a high resolution (at least 8”X 12” horizontal at 300 dpi; file should be more than 2 MB as a JPEG) photo that is season-appropriate or neutral for the month you sponsor. Focus and lighting is important! Visit the GreytStore today to purchase the sponsorship for your favorite month before they sell out! We only have 8 months and the cover left.

We can’t wait to see all the cute photos and know that you’re going to make Melody’s job hard!

What were the adoption fees back in February of this year? They seem to have increased quite a bit!

At the Tumblr desk, we don’t recall what they were in February. But yes, they have increased, as have our expenses. If you have questions about adoptions you can reach our adoption team at adoptions@galtx.org.

GALTx eNews: Greyt Art & Accessories For New Arrivals!

On Saturday, June 12th, 2021, GALT welcomed 28 Greyhounds from farms in Kansas to the GALT family! Eight have moved on to GALT Central Texas to find their forever homes and 20 will remain in Dallas. Of the 20 remaining in Dallas, ten are girls and ten are boys. They range in age from around two years old to around six. See casual photos of them on arrival day here.

GALT typically spends more than $750 in vet bills on an otherwise healthy retiring Greyhound to prepare them for adoption. This expense includes a complete exam and blood work, spay or neuter, a dental, micro-chipping and any needed vaccinations. If our vets identify any health concerns or the hound has an injury, treatment costs more. So this group of new hounds means big bills for us.

Our next auction in celebration of our 20th birthday, our Greyt Art and Accessories Auction, opened this morning, just in time to help us with the new arrivals! This auction features gorgeous and unique art pieces, jewelry items such as the pictured Northcoast Greyhound Support “Brynn” pendant, purses and other accessories - something for everyone! Your generous bids will help the hounds and you can pick up some really cool stuff for post-pandemic stepping out! Please bid high and bid often right up until bidding closes at 9:00 pm central time on June 28th, 2021! We understand auctions aren’t for everyone. You can also make donations to help our new arrivals on our Facebook Fundraiser or on our website.
